BORP: Adaptive Sports Audit
The Gold Standard for Outreach and Recreation in the Bay Area
π½οΈ BORP: Breaking Down Barriers Since 1976
The Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program (BORP) has spent nearly 50 years proving that mobility complications should never be a barrier to being an athlete. Founded by people with disabilities, it remains a vital community hub for anyone looking to stay active and connected.
Located at the Berkeley Marina, BORP's Adaptive Cycling Center features one of the largest fleets of adaptive cycles in the world. From handcycles to "side-by-side" tandems, you don't need to own equipment to rideβthey provide it all.
π² Berkeley Marina Cycling
The paths at the Berkeley Marina are paved, flat, and offer world-class views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Pro-Tip: Reservations are mandatory and fill up fast. Book your slot at least a week in advance through their online calendar to ensure equipment availability.
π Competitive & Recreational Teams
BORP runs nationally-traveling competitive teams for Power Soccer, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair rugby. If competitive sports aren't your speed, they also host accessible group outings for kayaking, birding, and camping.
π The Social Lifeline
At BORP, you aren't "the person in the wheelchair"βyou're just another athlete on the court. For those in the South Bay, itβs worth the haul to Berkeley for the community energy and access to $5,000+ custom cycles for a tiny monthly fee. They even offer virtual Zoom classes for those who can't make the drive.
